Doxie Go Smart Digital Scanner - A Review

Doxie sent me a Doxie Go Smart Digital Scanner for the purpose of this review.

I'm really excited to share with all of you this awesome scanner I've been playing with for a few days now. I'm going to break down my review based on awesome pictures that can be found on the Doxie Website. 

Here are the basic specs for the scanner and they are solid. The reason this scanner is such a big deal to me is because my alternative scanning options involves the huge printer/fax/scanner down the hall that is constantly in use. This little guy can sit neatly on my desk and come with me if I'm in the library for the day. I can scan anything an everything at my leisure without being at the mercy of the copier line. It scans at the speeds it displays and the pictures are crisp. Scanned assignments look wonderful on the screen once they are uploaded. 

The core features are exactly what you would be hoping for in a scanner and exactly what Doxie promises. I can scan anywhere I want. That simple. I've scanned at home, at school, in the parking lot of the bank, at the coffee shop and at the mall. With the charged scanner, I was able to scan wherever I pleased without incident. I was able to scan using an SD card and a USB without issue. I also scanned plenty without the card or drive and the scanner saved everything I scanned and it uploaded smoothly to my computer. The wireless upload worked like a peach once it was set up on my end. That might be tough for the novice user, but it was a breeze for me. 

Here is the big one for me. I can sync all of my stuff to Evernote! This is awesome. I'm a recent Evernote convert and am organizing my life and notes using this great tool. I can scan anything and send it directly to Evernote. That is huge. For Dropbox people, you can also send it there as well. Are you a Google Docs person? Well, you can send it to your Google account as well. Doxie works with just about everyone. I still have some documents that are not in digital form and Doxie allows me to take them and organize them in a way that best suits me. Even if you do not use any of these other tools, you can just save the scanned piece as a searchable PDF and keep it in a folder on your computer. It has options for everyone!

The big one for me is seeing how it is going to work with my iPad. If I'm scanning things, I want to access them on my iPad. If you are not using a wireless SD card, it would be wise to get the Camera Connection Kit. With a traditional SD card, you can scan the documents you want then slide the card into the connection to your iPad. The documents are instantly upload to iPhoto. From there, you can drop them into specific Evernote or Dropbox accounts. If you tend to need lots of scanning and travel quite often, the wireless SD card might be the route to go. If it is just occasional scanning with your iPad present, the traditional SD card will be fine. 

At $199, the Doxie Go Smart Digital Scanner might seem pricey, but I think it is a great value. I have plenty of items that need to be scanned and saved in one of the many other tools that Doxie works. I will have receipts from travelling, pictures that Leo will draw and many other things that I will receive in paper form that I will want to save in my digital space. 

I could see how this awesome scanner could be used in an Elementary classroom where a teacher scans and shares work their students complete with parents and the school as a whole. Since it is such a quick scan and load process, Teachers could quickly scan student work and share it before the students even get home. What a great way to create a digital portfolio of a student's work.
